Fortunately, all these can be well understood if we have an idea of buky ball (fullerence) , nanotubes, and quantum dots...

Note: I didn't use carbon in any of the product mentioned above ..Its because we can do it on other materials also..for eg: silicon nanotube, Silver nanotube instead of carbon atom

Bucky ball:

Its discovered by Richard Smalley..Got noble prize for this work.It look like ball with hexagon and pentagon faces all around..each corner of faces occupied by atoms.. C60 is famous one..( 60 stand for no.of.atoms; C stands for Carbon atom).. C70,C80 also present..

Remarkable thing is that all Bucky balls (C60,C70,C80) have same no.of.pentagon faces (12 faces).Anyhow,no.of.hexagon faces changes....

Nanotube:

As it is said in many places, it is elongated version of bucky ball...Its of two types namely single-walled nanotube and multi-walled nanotube..

Due to lack of time (christmas yha..my momma calling me for dinner), i will post ppt that i prepared for nanotube and buckyball tomorrow (hopefully)

Bye....

Intro :Application

Hi,

I think i posted this after one year gap..Being engineering student always make u busy..

Ok...Lets once again we will start with basic of nanotechnology. MANY science-fiction stories portray a time when warring generals monitor their forces on computer displays that are linked to electronic suits worn by each of their soldiers. Information about any injuries is sent to the command station immediately, so the generals will know that, say, Sergeant Johnson has a fractured ankle or that Corporal Caley has lost 1.2 litres of blood. Such a day may not be too far off. Researchers have been able to produce cotton fibres capable of detecting blood and of signalling its presence electrically.Intelligent textiles have a lot of appeal. For both soldiers and doctors clothing that adapts to changing conditions could provide adjustable levels of protection from such things as microbes, chemicals and radiation. Commercial manufacturers see huge potential in clothes that glow, do not wrinkle or overcome body odour. Materials can already be made to do some of these things, but they are too bulky, rigid or complicated for practical use. So the aim is to manufacture a light material that can be easily woven but that is also highly durable and, in order to transmit information, capable of electrical conductivity.A team of researchers led by Nicholas Kotov, a chemical engineer at the University of Michigan, has come up with a way in which this might be done by coating cotton threads with carbon nanotubes. These tubes are cylindrical carbon molecules with a unique honeycomb-like arrangement of atoms. They are regarded as among the most versatile nanomaterials available because of their mechanical strength and electrical properties

links:http://www.economist.com/science/tm/displaystory.cfm?story_id=12756435

Will Nanotechnology Transform IT?

Abstract:
Even though it has already bringing in radical changes in the fields of healthcare, textile, paint, rubber, automobile industries, but lately also seeing advances on the IT front.Talking to CXOtoday, Ashok Kumar Manoli, principal secretary IT, BT & Science & Technology, Government of Karnataka said, "Without doubt, nanotechnology is making rapid advances in the IT industry since IT is one of the defining features of today's world. However, if doctors were to use them in humans, quantum dots could have limitations related to their size and possible toxicity.Scientists at Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology have found a way around those limitations by exploiting a property of semiconductors called "lattice strain." By layering materials with different chemical compositions on top of each other, the researchers can create particles with new optical properties.

links:http://www.nanotech-now.com/news.cgi?story_id=31595

Nanomaterial demand will grow 40% in 2009, says The Information Network

Despite a sluggish forecast for the overall high-tech industry in 2009, nanomaterials consumption for electronics applications will grow 40% in 2009, according to The Information Network. Key markets for nanomaterials will be the semiconductors, solar, display, sensors, RFID and lighting markets.

"Nanomaterials utilization in semiconductor applications will have a 62.6% share of the US$800 million market in 2009, primarily because of utilization of designer molecules for DUV photoresists and for slurries for chemical mechanical planarization." noted Dr Castellano, president of The Information Network. "Nanotubes and nanowires will enter the semiconductor market after 2010 and begin to gain share."

The primary application for nanomaterials in the solar sector will be for CIGS-based (copper indium gallium selenide) cells, where nanoparticle ink can simply be printed onto a roll of conductive substrate material. The process is many times cheaper and faster than conventional semiconductor processing methods.

However, the semiconductor sector will lose market share to sensors and RFID, and by 2015 its share will have dropped to 58.1% of the nearly US$7 billion market for nanomaterials.
The nanomaterial market will grow at a compound annual rate of more than 40% between 2008 and 2015

Bucky papers

ABSTRACT:
Though widely researched for many years, the transfer of nanotube properties to composite materials to produce high performance composites has proved a difficult feat. Research for the past five years at the Florida Advanced Center for Composite Technologies on the further development of a novel pure nanotube material, called buckypaper, might soon enable the manufacturing of stronger and lighter aircraft with larger payloads and greater fuel efficiency. In the more distant future, lighter cars with better fuel efficiency and even materials for improved thermal management of computers are envisioned

links:
1. http://www.rinr.fsu.edu/spring2006/features/paperpromise.html
2. http://thefutureofthings.com/articles.php?itemId=24/61/

Nanotechnology for Indians

My friends,
This blog is created for all lovers of new scientific era of nanotechnology.
I welcome you all to see and provide some valuable informations about nanoscience.
